Vladimir Kagan 'Wide Angle' Sofa in Red Brown Upholstery and Walnut

About the Item

Vladimir Kagan for Vladimir Kagan Designs, Inc., ‘Wide Angle’ sofa, model ‘W 506’, fabric, walnut, United States, circa 1970 This rare ‘Wide Angle’ sofa is designed by Vladimir Kagan around the 1970s. The construction is defined by a boomerang shape with round edges and curved lines. The generous sized silhouette highlights the streamlined organic shape. Free from unnecessary decorations, the sofa is characterized by utter simplicity and precise scaling. The biomorphic profile is not only visually appealing, but also offers excellent comfort due to the ergonomic quality of the seat. The backrest seamlessly transitions into the diagonal-positioned armrests. Crafted from walnut, the base is comprised of a sleek framework with tapered feet. This sofa can be placed in the middle of one's interior or away from the wall, creating a lively and dynamic flow in the room. Vladimir Kagan (1927-2016) was born in Germany and grew up in the United States where his father opened a cabinet shop. Later, Kagan joined the family business. Here the designer experimented with organically sculpted wood in works that became the hallmarks of his career. Kagan himself explained that his father always said 'measure three times and cut once' whereas Kagan did exactly the opposite. He also believed that there was no way that ratio could replace dumb luck. Kagan's furniture has the extraordinary ability to completely change the landscape of the room, even with a single object. Kindly take note that the sofa is in need of reupholstery. The depicted photographs show an example of the way this item can be tailored to specific wishes of our clients. We kindly ask you to contact our design experts to discuss your wishes regarding upholstery and finishing. Your special requests can be realized by the experienced craftspeople in our own in-house restoration and upholstery atelier. With high attention to the original, they make sure every piece retains its value and is ready for the many years to come.
