About the Item

A very special pair of rare stools by Pierre Jeanneret for the Chandigarh Project ca. 1962. These stools were made in very limited quantities and are particularly difficult to source. These examples are in terrific vintage condition with standard wear and patina from decades of honest use. Cotton string webbing makes up the seat section resting on solid teak pencil shaped legs. Originally designed in the 1950s by Pierre Jeanneret for the Indian city of Chandigarh, the furniture was crafted from local, affordable teak and featured simple, functional designs. For decades, it was used in government offices, then largely discarded. While his more famous cousin, Le Corbusier, created the city's master plan, Jeanneret was the quiet, on-the-ground force who oversaw the project for 15 years. He served as Chandigarh's Chief Architect and Town Planning Advisor, and his simple, modernist touch is evident across the city, from the major buildings at Panjab University to the mass housing for city workers. Deeply committed to the city, Jeanneret used his time there to mentor a young team of Indian architects, sharing his knowledge and fostering the development of India's modern architecture. He truly fell in love with India and the city he helped build; upon his death in 1967, his ashes were scattered in Chandigarh's Sukhna Lake, as was his wish.
