A very fine secretary desk of diminutive proportions, this fabulous form features an upper bookcase with a cove-molded cornice over a pair of glazed doors with eight panels each, these divided with original astragal moldings, opening to reveal an adjustable three-shelf space bookcase. The doors are beautifully embellished with fluted pilasters boasting Ionic capitals that are exquisitely detailed with rich undercutting.
The lower case features a brushing slide situated over five rows of graduated drawers, the second from the top cleverly fitted with a green baize writing surface that pushes back to reveal storage space beneath while the faceted glass inkwell bottles (one missing the lid) and double trough pen tray are situated along the right side.
The timbers selected for the case are above reproach and present with a ruby hue throughout that is incredibly appealing, this finished under a glowing silky French polish to the mahogany veneers throughout. The drawers are hung with period Georgian brasses...

A large and impressive late Regency six door mahogany bookcase attributed to Gillows, the upper section with a triple breakfront cornice above glazed doors with brass diamond trellis grilles, each enclosing adjustable shelves, the base with panelled cupboards decorated with book-matched flame veneers between turned columns with palmette terminals. The bookcase of large form but of elegant proportions, having a pleasing low waist, always desirable on case furniture of this sort, brass grilles, a plinth base veneered in the finest mahogany and intriguing inlaid quatrefoil shaped escutcheons to the central doors.
Designed in the early 19th century “Roman” fashion, this bookcase is one of a small group of such pieces that have been linked in the past to designs provided by the Wyatt family of architects (see for example a bookcase of remarkably similar form offered by Christie’s in London on the 16th of December 2010 with an estimate of £40-£60,000). Although any link with Wyatt must remain purely speculative, the attribution of this bookcase to the firm of Gillows of Lancaster can be made with a much higher degree of confidence. This attribution is based partly on a fine suite of similar library bookcases supplied to Tatton Park and discussed in detail by Dr. Susan Stuart in Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840, page 375-377, plates 443 & 444. Suspended home-office cabinet. The opening of the unit, characterized by the Dual-Flap® system (patented Acerbis) in which the large door and a portion of the top open simultaneously, transforms the door into practical desk and reveals the interior, finished in eucalyptus wood and perfectly arranged with shelves, small drawer for pens and power plugs (2 Shuko and 2 USB). At the same time, the small top remains open with the right angle to facilitate access to the compartment and illuminate the interior with a continuous beam of light, thanks to a LED lamp perfectly integrated in the thickness of the top.
Finishes:
- Door and top glossy or matt lacquered.
- Sides and internal uprights matt lacquered in the colour of the door.
- Interior in Eucalyptus veneer.

Born in Milan in 1981, Giacomo Moor, after graduating in Design with a final dissertation on wood published by Abitare, opened his studio with his partner. With his multidisciplinary team, designers and woodworkers, he designs products for companies, he creates limited editions for galleries, produces unique pieces for private clients, and he is engaged in every step of the process. Giacomo Moor unites the precision and the formal rigour of the design with the sensitivity of manual craftsmanship, his empirical and resolving approach, and his capacity to combine technical and aesthetical skills, managing the production process, are constant elements of his working method.
