A Very Good Louis XV Period Panelled Buffet Bas in Oak, France Circa 1740

About the Item

A very handsome & diminutive 18th century Louis XV oak buffet bas, demonstrating superior form & exacting proportions. The panelled case showing traditional peg-joined mortise & tenon construction, the framed sides inset with floating panels, the front featuring twin hand-carved fluted pilasters flanking a pair of panelled doors with dramatic hand-carved rectilinear raised moldings. Both doors are hung on barrel hinges opening to a shelved interior, the right-hand door showing a foliate ormolu escutcheon fronting a functioning lock mechanism & key. Raised overall on cabriole front supports & shaped rear supports. Dimensions, 31" high x 38" wide x 22.5" deep. The modest scale of this very charming 18th century French buffet allows it to function comfortably in any number of smaller spaces, such as a foyer or on a stairwell landing.

Additions or alterations made to the original: The exterior surface has been refinished & polished, the underside & back showing areas of later conservation, the lock mechanism & escutcheon are of a later date. Wear consistent with age and use. Exhibiting excellent colour & fine proportions, and in extremely good overall condition noting early & later conservation consistent with 280 plus years of use.
