Black Quasi Cabinet

About the Item

The Quasi-series is about the pursuit of orders that are rigorously modular but wild—almost out of order. Quasicrystals, a new phase of matter discovered in 1982, represent this kind of material structure that hovers on the edge of falling apart. Unlike a regular crystal, whose molecular pattern is periodic (or repetitive in all directions), the distinctive quality of a quasicrystal is that its structural pattern never repeats the same way twice. It is endless and uneven, but interestingly, it can be described by the arrangement of a small set of modular parts. The piece was first commissioned by Johnson Trading Gallery in white color.

What could the design of a storage cabinet be like today? This is the question DriadeLab, Driade’s observatory on contemporary lifestyles, asked itself when it started to research into this project. The result was Ziqqurat:a cabinet made up of different boxes that can be piled up to create everchanging forms. This system, constructive in all respects, can be used to create arrangements of three different sizes depending on the space available. The project’s source of inspiration, ancient sumerian...

Jean-Luc Le Mounier, Papillon, Black Wings, Two-Door Cabinet, France, 2021
By Jean-Luc Le Mounier
Located in New York, NY
By employing ever-more complex techniques, wedding rare species of wood and precious metals in novel arrangements, and endowing each piece with incredible components, Jean-Luc Le Mounier creates work, astonishing and seductive in equal measure, that pushes the frontier of his craft into the realm of art. This exciting exploration is perhaps best-evidenced by Papillon pieces, Le Mounier’s series of inimitable cabinets, all rendered by his expert hand, and featuring doors carved into the shape of a butterfly’s wings. This particular iteration features wings covered in black straw marquetry, a delicate inner gate wrought of antiqued bronze, and a sumptuous interior of lemon ceylon wood.
