Charles Dudouyt Carved Oak Highboard with Brass Keys, France 1950s

About the Item

Featuring French designer, Charles Dudouyt’s signature style, this grandiose high board melds seamlessly with any style thanks to its elegant sense of lavishness. The oak form is elemental, enhanced by the rectangular carvings and details. With its graphic carvings on the doors and sides, this tall cabinet showcases Dudouyt’s Art Deco inspired aesthetic and impeccable attention to detail. As a major figure in early 20th-century French design, Dudouyt was known for his ability to move France’s design aesthetic from an elaborate classicism to a more modernist sensibility. This compact cabinet model is a beautiful example of his work, with a more contemporary form that still retains some influence from the predecessor art movements. The doors open to reveal a spacious interior, with adjustable shelves that can be customized to house any item. As a fundamentally functional type of furniture, this cabinet does more than serving its utilitarian purpose. The front is decorated with beautiful rectangular carvings and brass fittings crafted with utmost care and attention to detail. The French designer’s pieces generally show great balance between decorative and functional elements which is the case here as well. The design still primarily aims to serve as storage space, while also being a visual treat. The doors on the front can be opened with the help of brass keys, a small and charming feature. A favourite among Art Deco furniture collectors and enthusiasts, the work of Dudouyt is known for their rustic and modernist aesthetic. This high board is a testament to the quality of the designer’s work. The beautiful graphical carvings and modernist design make it a true statement piece. ?Condition: In good vintage condition. "Chaises Basses" Low Chairs by Charles Dudouyt, France 1930s
By Charles Dudouyt
Located in Utrecht, NL
Turned chairs — sometimes called thrown chairs or spindle chairs — represent a style of Elizabethan or Jacobean turned furniture that had a vogue in late 16th and early 17th century England, New England and Holland. The technique was carried on to the 20th century and was widespread in Europe as well, where craftsmen created durable pieces for various interiors and purposes. These chairs were designed by French designer, Charles Dudouyt, who originally created this pair of small carved chairs as ‘fireside’ chairs, hence the “chaises basses...

Brutalist Sideboard Oak, France, 1950s
By Charles Dudouyt
Located in Kaštel Sućurac, Splitsko-dalmatinska županija
This sculptural sideboard holds a quiet monumentality—its façade a study in balance, depth, and geometric relief. Two symmetrical doors are adorned with deeply carved concentric medallions, each centered within a bevel-edged square that projects from the surface like a wooden echo. Between them, five central drawers offer rhythmic contrast with their horizontal fluting, lending a linear tension to the rounded volumes flanking them. In the style of Charles Dudouyt, this piece reflects the postwar fascination with medieval forms reinterpreted through modernist clarity. The carved motif—a recessed bull’s-eye framed in architectural moldings—recalls the rustic abstraction seen in French design of the 1940s and ’50s, where massing, form, and shadow did the work of ornament. Carved from solid oak, the cabinet is grounded by splayed bracket legs that introduce a subtle kinetic lift. Their flared stance balances the robust body above, suggesting movement held in suspension. The drawer pulls are brass discs, minimal in gesture yet warm in tone, allowing the sculptural surfaces to speak. Inside, the cabinet offers generous storage behind paneled doors, while the drawers glide with dovetail construction and timeworn ease. A visible fissure on one of the door medallions...
