About the Item

An incredible solid teak example of the iconic PJ-R-01-C sideboard. This piece is in incredible sympathetically restored condition. Three small drawers on the top , two large doors on left, and four more smaller shelves to the right. A solid slat back and interior. Ingenious and equally simple finger pulls backed in thin aluminum strips. Lettering designating area and room are intact adding to its authenticity and history. A small production quantity on these. Pierre Jeanneret (1896–1967) was a Swiss architect best known for his close collaboration with his cousin, Le Corbusier. Although he worked on numerous modernist projects throughout his career, Jeanneret’s most significant and enduring contribution was his work on the city of Chandigarh, India, during the 1950s. When the Government of India commissioned Le Corbusier to design a new capital for the state of Punjab after Partition, Jeanneret joined the team as a senior architect and became a key figure in bringing the visionary plan to life. While Le Corbusier provided the overall master plan and designed major civic buildings, Jeanneret stayed in Chandigarh for nearly 15 years, overseeing the execution of the project and adapting modernist ideas to local culture, climate, and materials. Jeanneret designed many of the city’s public buildings, educational institutions, and residential typologies, including the distinctive government housing for different worker categories. He also played an important role in furniture design, creating functional, locally crafted pieces—many of which have since become iconic examples of mid-century modern design. His dedication to Chandigarh was profound: he lived modestly in the city, cycled to work, and developed a deep bond with the project and its people. Today, Chandigarh remains a living testament to his commitment and architectural vision, making Pierre Jeanneret one of the central figures in shaping modern Indian urbanism.
