Rare Swedish Bar Cabinet in Walnut and Cognac Leather with Brass Nails

About the Item

Attributed to Otto Schulz, bar cabinet, walnut veneer, leather, brass, glass, Sweden, circa 1940. This exquisitely decorated bar piece is attributed to the illustrious Swedish designer Otto Schulz, a prominent figure in the Scandinavian design movement. The piece exemplifies the maker's mastery of proportion, featuring an open base that supports a well-proportioned bar unit. This bar is a testament to exceptional woodworking, showcased through its skillful carvings and the rhomboid surface pattern, accentuated by brass studs. These elements create a dynamic, tactile front that draws the eye. The bar’s functionality is evident in its ample storage solutions, with two drawers and multiple shelves offering practical space within its interior. A standout feature is the mirrored veneer doors, which display matching wood grains, adding to the piece's visual harmony and elegance. The interior is illuminated by a horizontally placed luminous bar, which casts a warm glow through an irregular pattern of golden paint, enhancing the bar’s sophisticated aesthetic. This piece is a striking example of 1940s Swedish design, combining beauty, craftsmanship, and functionality in perfect harmony. Otto Schulz (1882-1970) was a German designer and architect schooled at the Technical University in Berlin-Charlottenberg and the Architectural School in Berlin amongst others. The majority of his career was however spent in Sweden. He worked as a draftsman and interior designer for several years after his arrival in Sweden. In 1920, he founded Boet together with Adolf Nordic Borg, the head of Nordiska Kompaniet's design offices, a company that came to be a well-established interior design shop that also published a magazine under the same name. Schulz design was often so inventive, that he patented some of his techniques such as his characteristic decorative brass nail designs referred to as Bopoint. His design is known for its capability to blend traditional elements and techniques with a modern style.
