About the Item

Dutch rococo cabinet atributted to Matthijs Franses, in the style of Abraham Roentgen The Hague, circa 1765 266 high, 193 wide and 70 cm deep Oak and softwood veneered with mahogany, gilded brass fittings Provenance: Private collection Rhineland, Germany This exceptional cabinet is part of a quite large group of furniture of which little is known but which was certainly manufactured in the Netherlands. This group consists of different types of furniture, secretaries based on the French example, many chests of drawers, but also toilet mirrors and mirror-top desks and a few typical Dutch cabinets. Much of the furniture from this group is decorated with geometric marquetry. This marquetry consists of a latticework pattern with quartered fields of veneer within. Some furniture also has hollow copper profiles. The fittings can be found in catalogues of English foundries. These features, the parquetry patterns, the copper profiles, and the English fittings, also occur on furniture made by the famous German furniture maker Abraham Roentgen. This has ensured that a lot of furniture from this group has been attributed to Roentgen. However, Dutch furniture differs from Roentgen furniture in many respects, both structurally and in design and execution. This cabinet consists of a single-curved base cabinet with five drawers, on the two upper drawers a carved console. The upper part consists of two large doors, behind which is a simple interior with six drawers and three shelves. The cabinet is crowned by a curved top with a particularly large carved rococo crest centrally placed. There are also two carved ornaments on the corners of the top. The typical geometric marquetry can be found here on the knees, corner posts of the doors. The beautiful English fittings are also present here. Matthijs Franses worked in The Hague and in 1761 he placed two advertisements where he described his furniture as furniture made after French examples. Franses himself comes from Kempen in the German Rhineland, the same area where Abraham Roentgen worked. It is therefore quite possible that Franses did not get his inspiration from France but from the Rhineland, where Roentgen also made furniture in the French style. Matthijs Franses had one of the largest and most important cabinet workshops in The Hague and regularly employed workers from Germany. Abraham Roentgen also worked and lived in the Netherlands twice. Further research remains to be seen what the connection between Abraham Roentgen and Matthijs Franses was.
