18th Century Italian Walnut Chest Of Drawers / Commode With Inlay

About the Item

Commode hand-made in central Italy in the early 1700s using walnut and decorated with walnut and fruitwood inlay. The commode features three inset drawers all with beautiful hand-made dovetail joints, and decorated on the front with geometrical symmetrical raised molding. The itself is additionally decorated with two thin lines of inlay veneer that follow along the perimeter of the shape. By playing with the color of the inlay and the placement of the molding the maker of this piece was able to provide a lot of depth to a piece that is rather rectangular and linear. The top is made of three boards that are nailed to the case with squared nails and is framed with hand-carved rounded molding on the bottom. Molding also framed the bottom edge of the case on three sides. The commode sits on hand-carved bracket feet. Overall this is a stunning piece with gorgeous patina and color. The old walnut is warm and deep, and the different darker chips or inconsistencies created by time and use add more detail and depth to piece. The drawer work well and can be used on a daily basis. The drawers open by using the key, which does not work the locks. This piece would look great in an entryway to welcome people in your home.
