About the Item

Painted Louis XVI commode hand-made in southern France in the mid 1700s using oak. The commode shows beautiful straight lines with some depth added by hand-carved fluting and two-toned paint. The commode features three inset drawers made of chamfered panels framed by flat molding. The sides also feature chamfered flat panels framed by rounded molding. On the front the commode is decorated by a single fluting that runs vertically along the corner, and recalls the fluting present in original tapered legs. The top of the commode is decorated with an ogee edge. This is a very simple and elegant chest with a beautiful whitish-mint color highlighted by gray. The beautiful crackle on the paint also provides highlights of light blue and white, giving the commode a lot of depth, despite its very linear structure. The drawers are still all functional and can be used on a daily basis, making this a perfect commode for those looking for both a decorative as well as practical piece of furniture. The hardware is not original to the piece, however matches the style perfectly. The paint, although not original was still done using old recipes and natural pigments and not modern pre-made paints.
