Early 20th Century Louis XV Style Chinoiserie Lacquer and Ormolu Commode

About the Item

An elegant early 20th century Louis XV Style Chinoiserie Commode designed in the mid 18th century style with marble topped ebonized lacquered and gild bronze mounts. Beautifully executed with exceptional hand-painted figures and landscape decoration. The commode has two full-width drawers mounted "san traverse"; the sides and Bombe face front are set with shaded Chinoiserie bantam lacquer with diminutive figures posed in riparian landscapes on a black ground. It's completed with an attractively figured breche de violet marble top. The overall condition is good. There are, though, a number of small old nicks and scratches, most notable on the forelegs and apron--they were stabilized with over-lacquering, visible only in raking light (see photo sequence), at an unknown date prior to the acquisition of the current owner's family in the early 1950s (see photos).
