18th Century Walnut Kneehole Desk
Located in Bedfordshire, GB
A very attractive early 18th century, George I Period, walnut kneehole desk of diminutive proportions, having extremely well figured quarter veneered, crossbanded top with elegant re-entrant corners, over arrangement of seven drawers retaining original brasswear, flanking central cupboard door with original brass hinges, raised on original bracket feet.
In general kneehole deeks are regarded as a smaller, more compact version of the more typically found pedestal desk, with some form of an arrangement of drawers around a central set recessed cupboard being the typically found form. There are of course various different designs to be found along the same theme, but as a general rule that is the form you will usually find in a georgian kneehole desk...

Late 16th Century Genoan Bambocci Chest of Drawers
Located in Saint-Ouen, FR
Provenance: Gismondi collection, before 1973.
Historical Context
This walnut wood and walnut burl cassetone is a remarkable example of Mannerist art applied to furniture in the late 16th century.
While the Mannerist movement appeared and grew in Florence before acquiring its international stature it also spread to Northern Italy as soon as the late 16th century early 17th century.
To the opposite of the rest of Italy where classic motifs are adopted very early, northern regions maintain the use of Renaissance motifs very late all through the 17th century. Sculpture now leaving the austere environment of churches and civil buildings appear in private homes where it graces state rooms and studies.
This craze is particularly expressed on furniture from Liguria and particularly in Genoa where are produced highly carved furnitures with figures and spectacular decors called bambocci. This typically Genoese pieces express nonetheless a Florentine origin through Mannerism.
Description
This Genoese chest is framed by small figures skilfully carved from one wood chunk...

Elizabethan 16th Century Diminutive Cedar Wood Table Casket/Cabinet or Desk Box
Located in Oxfordshire, United Kingdom
The late 16th century Elizabeth I Diminutive Cedar wood table casket or desk box, Circa 1600. England.
The raised and moulded top slides open to reveal a recessed well.
The entire moulded 'caddy' with applied edge-mouldings to all faces opens on strap hinges to a box interior exposing an internal sliding peg to the lockable sliding panelled frieze with pyramid centres, concealing four small drawers around a central deeper drawer above a long drawer, all with edge mouldings and turned handles. Raised on an intricately moulded base and raised on what is believed to be all of the original reeded bun feet.
It should be noted - Caskets of this form from the Elizabethan period are extremely rare.
This casket is one of the most accomplished and original examples to be discovered. The colour and patination of the original surfaces are outstanding. Sensational.
