About the Item

Hardstone, ormolu and Boulle mounted ebonised wood sideboard French, Late 19th Century Height 114cm, width 178cm, depth 50cm This splendid sideboard, carved from ebonised wood, stands as an exceptional testament to the fine craftsmanship in late 19th century France. Its surfaces boast an elaborate array of decorative elements, including intricate Boulle-style marquetry and vibrant hardstone inlays, creating a captivating tapestry of design. On full display, the central cabinet door is adorned with an exquisite hardstone design. This colourful tableau artfully presents a lush composition of flowers, foliage, and fruits, bound together with a cream-coloured ribbon. A charming bird rests on one of the branches, adding a delightful touch of nature, while a butterfly is depicted in mid-flight, heading towards the verdant foliage. The hardstone composition is elegantly framed within an oval ormolu border, crowned with a large, flowing ribbon. Each corner of the door is accentuated by an ornate ormolu cartouche. Within these, the artistry of Boulle première-partie marquetry is on full display, showcasing intricate designs of brass inlaid into tortoiseshell. The thoughtful detail in this cabinet’s design lends it an air of nobility and grandeur. The piece is flanked by curved glazed doors, revealing the velvet-lined shelves nestled within. Each compartment can be securely locked. Further enhancing the opulent visual appeal, the credenza's top frieze is embellished with further geometric ormolu mounts. An eye-catching detail comes in the form of the carved column decorations separating the three doors, which draw inspiration from the iconic design of Corinthian columns and are endowed with ornate ormolu capitals and bases. The piece rests on four toupie ormolu mounted feet, giving it a sturdy and elegant foundation. The extensive variety of materials and decorative techniques employed in crafting this exquisite credenza make it a splendid, momentous piece capable of giving an air of palatial luxury to any interior.
