Louis XV Style Showcase 19th Century
Located in Lisbon, PT
A stunning Vernis Martin vitrine cabinet, glazed paneled doors with painted gallant scenes and exquisite ormolu mounts.
Four beautiful hand painted panels “H . Martin “ signed by the family descendants of the Martin brothers (in the court of Louis XV) the first importers of lacquer painting who kept the art through the generations.
Two central panels with romantic courting couples and the other two landscape scenes.
Veneered wood, bronze mounts, curved glass with satin lined interior with two glass shelves.
Vernis Martin.
The Martin brothers were famous painters, gilders and varnishers who also worked for Louis XV in Versailles. Their dynasty lasted for almost eight decades, during which time they practiced in many fields, producing
toilet sets, box sets, mirrors, small objects, cases, furniture, wood ornamentation, carriages and coaches.
The Martins’ reputation and excellence overshadowed a great number of other painter-varnishers of the time they created a stylistic resurgence,
associated with the technique of peinture à l’huile vernie-polie, which was directly connected to the art and style...

Jean Claude Mahey Desk in Lacquered Wood & Brass, 1970s
By Jean Claude Mahey
Located in Tilburg, NL
Jean Claude Mahey Desk in Lacquered Wood & Brass, Paris, France, 1970s.
This is a wonderful desk / table / vanity table in lacquered wood and brass by designer Jean Claude Mahey. A great and quintessential seventies Hollywood Regency design with hints to Art Deco and 1930s furniture. Great and deep 'Sang de Boeuf' red color and inlayed brass which gained a nice patination over time.
This desk features nice proportions and clean lines, but looks very chique and rich due to the use of high gloss lacquer of a very grand quality. Seven or eight layers of lacquer are applied to the wood. There are three drawers at the front and a nicely finished backside, so this desk can be used as a freestanding unit in the room.
The desk shows signs of wear and use, but this is inevitable with a lacquered piece of this age. But overall it is in a good vintage condition and perfectly usable in a stylish and elegant interior. Great as a writing desk or as a vanity desk.
Please note: we also have the original table / desk lamp which belonged to this desk for sale...

Desk with Shelf and Drawers by René Gabriel, 1950
By Rene Gabriel
Located in PARIS, FR
Desk with shelf and drawers by René Gabriel, 1950
This desk is one of the last pieces designed by the greatest designer of the French Reconstruction: René Gabriel (1899-1950).
René Gabriel (1899 - 1950) is a precursor of French industrial design. He was one of the first to create, as early as the 1930s, economical mass-produced furniture combining aestheticism, robustness and sobriety, a source of inspiration for a whole generation of future designers.
A student at the Germain Pilon School and then at the National School of Decorative Arts, René Gabriel began as a domino maker by designing and producing his own wallpapers, and then made his mark as a decorative artist in most of the salons and international exhibitions of the inter-war period. In 1927, he began his research into the creation of mass-produced furniture and proposed a piece of furniture composed of juxtaposable and superposable elements. He studied an economical version that he presented in 1934 at the Salon des arts ménagers under the name of RG elements.
Another major turning point came in 1944, when the Ministry of Reconstruction and Urban Planning commissioned him to create emergency furniture. A fervent advocate of furniture for all, René Gabriel designed numerous models for disaster victims by establishing close ties with industry. He also collaborated with Auguste Perret...
