Pierre Jeanneret: X Leg Chandigarh Desk, France/ India c. 1960

About the Item

Pierre Jeanneret (1896-1967) A rare and spectacular four-drawer bureau in teak by Pierre Jeanneret for the civic buildings in Chandigarh, India, designed by Le Corbusier. A stunning and uncommon work, the floating desk features a highly architectural, gracefully tapering X-shaped leg and a leather top, as well as four drawers with handsome half-moon aluminum pulls and a large, sleek compartment concealed by a door on the obverse, for books or other storage. A model of economical design, this stately, iconic piece makes excellent use of negative space and elevates functionality to an art form. The look is elegant, open, and ingeniously hand-crafted, befitting the high-ranked officials for whom the piece was intended. Distinctive, surprising, ultra-functional, and imbued with history, it's a standout marriage of brutalist and refined vernaculars that epitomizes Jeanneret's sturdy, practical, and imaginative humanism. It will anchor and transform its surroundings. The chair is no longer available but one can be sourced. Literature: "Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret: Chandigarh, India 1951-66," Galerie Patrick Seguin, pg. 260 and 261; and "Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret: The Indian Adventure," Eric Touchaleaume and Gerald Moreau, p. 577.
