The name "Davenport desk" comes from Captain Davenport, for whom the first example was commissioned by the furniture maker Gillows of Lancaster in the late 18th century
Davenport desks are compact writing desks characterized by a slanted lifting top and side drawers, originally designed in the late 18th century for naval officers. Their elegant form and practical storage make them a popular choice among antique furniture collectors.

The richly figured mahogany case showing a finely turned baluster gallery over a hinged leather topped writing compartment, opening to an interior fitted with small drawers with satinwood fronts & turned pulls.
The writing compartment having the added feature of enabling it to slide over the front of the base, thereby allowing for greater ease & comfort when seated in front.
