About the Item

Vintage U.S. Military medical field desk. Converts to coffee table. This is (NOS) New Old Stock military surplus, never previously used. I contemplated stripping the paint to reveal the polished stainless steel (nothing magnetic whatsoever) to get a Rene Herbst vibe but the original paint is in such great condition and is an attractive color green so I will leave it up to the buyer to decide. Dimensions as a desk: 29.5” high x 59” wide x 22” deep. Kneehole of desk 34” wide by 28.75” high Dimensions when folded up: 16.5” high by 30.5” wide x 22” deep. “The flat top desk is a folding type nurse's desk designed for use in military field hospitals. The desk is constructed so that the unit may be unfolded for use or folded for shipment without the use of special tools. No special maintenance or lubrication requirements are necessary for this unit. When folded for shipment it is capable of being used for storage of medical records and forms. The desk consists of a center panel and a right and left pedestal, the top of each forming the completed desk top when in an unfolded upright position. Two continuous hinges attach the pedestals to the center section, allowing the folding of pedestals in toward each other when the two spring-loaded lock bars, located in the bottom ends of apron on center section, are released. The desk is locked in the are releaste folded position with a spring-loaded lock bar located in the top rear corner of right hand pedestal. The left pedestal has one large drawer with two adjustable dividers. The right pedestal has two small drawers with a pencil tray in the bottom drawer. There is a tray stop on the bottom side of the drawer divider which keeps the tray at the front of the drawer.”

1968 Executive Desk
By Warren Platner
Located in Hanover, MA
Executive desk formerly belonging to noted architect George M. Notter, (1933–2007) of the Boston firm Anderson Notter Finegold (now known as Finegold Alexander Architects). Current institutional memory at the firm suggests it was a special order from Herman Miller for the then new New York offices of MGM, however Herman Miller's archivist was unable to confirm. Styling, particularly the distinctive slim milled aluminum tracks through which the entire drawer carriage glides is clearly similar to Warren Platner's designs for Lehigh-Leopold which were then among the most costly of executive office furnishings. The bent flat bar chromed steel base with its distinctive pigeon toe splay is somewhat similar to a table base in Stow Davis' Electa Series, designed by Alexis Yermakov circa 1971. Walnut laminate top is very clean with no issues. One corner edge shows a small separation. The only identifying markings are within the milled aluminum channel: G.P. F.I. 2 And the date Dec. 20, 1968. See image 18. Between the rectangular laminate top and the chrome base is a heavy blackened steel plate. Underneath the bent chrome pigeon toe feet are bars of a thick phenolic material which act as floor protector. We can have keys made to fit the two locking drawers. Tim Anderson...
