Biedermeier Secretaire with Hidden Compartement, Walnut, Austria circa 1820

About the Item

Secretary with black ink painting Austria Walnut Biedermeier circa 1820 Dimensions: H x W x D: 155 x 85 x 46 cm Description: Exceptionally narrow writing desk with a highly interesting interior and a fantastic walnut grain pattern. The body stands on pointed legs with two doors at the bottom, the writing flap above and a head drawer at the top. We see a calm and harmonious grain pattern that branches out wildly towards the top and creates a dramatic and exciting picture on the drawer front. If we open the lower doors, we find three drawers with brass bow handles. The centre drawer is divided into compartments. There are fragments of old compartment labelling on the back. Worth mentioning are the locking bolts on the left-hand door, which have aged so wonderfully and have that very special charm of old iron. If we open the writing flap, we see a spectacular interior with a central compartment flanked by six ebonised columns. The base is parquetised with finely painted flowers. The upper end of the compartment is formed by a round arch with a light-coloured keystone. The cross-vaulted ceiling of the compartment is certainly rare in this form. The architectural effect is further emphasised by the mirrors mounted on three sides. They ensure that the vault becomes a veritable archway, supported by impressive quadruple columns - a magnificent effect! By sliding the floor, we gain access to the four secret drawers hidden underneath. To the left and right of the compartment are three stacked drawers and one smaller open compartment each. At the very top there is a wide drawer decorated with acanthus tendrils. The sides of the piece of furniture also show a beautiful and clean grain pattern. The back panel is of frame construction. Here we can see the untouched patina that has grown over 200 years. Condition: Restored, stable condition suitable for everyday use. Surface polished with shellac.

19th Century Biedermeier Nutwood Secretary Desk/ Secretaire, Austria ca. 1820/25
Located in Lichtenberg, AT
Splendid early 19th century Biedermeier secretaire/ secretary desk from the renowed period in Vienna/ Austria around 1820/25. A spectacular, early example of a Biedermeier secretary which has been venereed with finest mirror-matched nutwood, showing an extraordinary grain - just see how elegantly the grain pattern runs down from the top to the base without any visible interuption. This perfect sized Biedermeier secretaire impresses with its cambered worked doors, a drawer on the top and a fold-down writing surface. Influenced by the previous empire epoch, this superb, antique secretary is adorned by two beautifully worked full columns. When you fold down the lockable writing surface, the amazing designed interior opens up to the viewer´s eye: 9 small drawers and another large one on top, architecturally structured with ebonized column decoration and the still original mirror (unfortunately cracked - see picture#18) in the back. Artfully worked brass applications with lion heads finalize the spectacular look. Traditionally hand polished with ruby shellac, which gives the surface this lovely slight red brown tone, this breathtaking early Biedermeier secretary...
