About the Item

C.F. Harsdorff, 1735–1799 A small, elegant Louis XVI secrétaire designed by the renowned Danish architect C.F. Harsdorff. Crafted in exceptional cabinetmaker quality from richly grained Cuban mahogany. The piece consists of two parts: The upper section features its original tambour door with faux leather book spines, embossed in gold leaf – a refined illusion typical of elite neoclassical design. The lower section has a slanted fall-front that opens to reveal a beautifully constructed writing interior. Inside, a central tambour compartment is flanked by several small drawers of varying sizes, an open cubbyhole, and fine neoclassical joinery details. Below the writing surface are four full-width drawers. All fittings, locks, and key are original. Made in Copenhagen, circa 1780–1790. A nearly identical secrétaire can be found at the charming Liselund summer residence on the island of Møn, Denmark – underscoring its aristocratic provenance and cultural significance. About C.F. Harsdorff (1735–1799) Caspar Frederik Harsdorff was Denmark’s leading architect during the Age of Enlightenment and a pivotal figure in introducing neoclassicism to Danish design. Educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen – where he later served as professor and director – Harsdorff shaped the architectural identity of late 18th-century Denmark. His furniture designs, often executed by master cabinetmakers for royal or noble patrons, are characterized by clarity, balance, and classical restraint. They remain highly prized for their elegant proportions and refined craftsmanship.
