English Georgian Chippendale Mahogany Bureau Bookcase with Carved Inlaid Cornice

About the Item

English 18th century George III Chippendale period mahogany bureau bookcase in two parts. The top section has two astragal glazed doors, three removable shelves which have a wide range of height adjustment. The cornice is an unusual one with inlaid satinwood verticals separating carved round mahogany discs, surmounted by dentil molding and a further layer of ogee molding. The base part of the bookcase is a fall front desk with three small drawers over three graduated full width drawers. The fall of the desk is mahogany, crossbanded in mahogany with a delicate ebony and boxwood rope stringing separating the crossbanding from the central panel. When the fall front is lowered it reveals a soft antique green leather writing surface with gold tooling (about 50 years old and in excellent condition). The desk has small drawers and cubby holes which surround a central cupboard door (which is inlaid with satinwood crossbanding and rope stringing of ebony and boxwood). When the small door is opened, three drawers and a storage space are revealed. If one removes the top two drawers completely, then pulls out the divider between the drawers a third secret drawer is revealed attached to the divider. A very clever way of hiding a secret drawer. The base is a classic Chippendale bracket base. There are two panes with small cracks in them. Circa 1790.

Replacements made: The leather was replaced in England approximately 40 to 50 years ago. The bureau bookcase has gone through our workshops and has been polished and checked over so it is ready to be used and enjoyed on a daily basis. Wear consistent with age and use. The width listed above is across the cornice. The body is 42 1/4" wide.
