About the Item

Gerrit Rietveld (1888–1964) Vitrine Secretary Cabinet – Unique Piece Lacquered metal, glass, and lacquered wood Executed by Gerard A. van de Groenekan Design circa 1940 This exceptional vitrine secrétaire is a unique piece by Dutch architect and designer Gerrit Rietveld, a central figure of the De Stijl movement. Created around 1940 and executed by his trusted collaborator Gerard A. van de Groenekan, the cabinet reflects Rietveld’s radical exploration of geometry, material, and spatial rhythm. Combining lacquered wood and metal with glass panels, the piece embodies Rietveld’s signature emphasis on visual clarity, structural honesty, and the expressive potential of simple forms. Both sculptural and functional, it articulates his vision of harmony through asymmetry and transparency. The piece remains in its original condition and has never been restored, preserving its historical authenticity and the subtle patina that speaks to its age and provenance.
