A George I period walnut kneehole desk, circa 1720. A popular form at this time, the top drawer has a pull-out secretaire drawer that is hinged at the bottom. Unlatched this drawer front provides a leather covered writing surface. Inside the secretaire drawer are pigeon holes and small drawers. The overlapping drawer fronts are edged with walnut crossbanding. The top is also crossbanded in walnut with one highly figured walnut veneer surface. The top molding is constructed in a 17th century style with walnut set on top of a softwood base. The bracket feet, two at the front of each are more stable and aesthetically pleasing than the two footed versions, one rear foot is replaced. The brasses, although 18th century in style and possibly manufacture, are not original. A very refined piece with all the design elements of the finest 18th century English furniture...
