Secrètaire Empire Lombardy Italy First Quarter Nineteenth Century
About the Item
Empire secretaire made in Milan in the early 1800s of mahogany veneered walnut and mahogany feather; on the front three drawers in the base body and on the top a drop-leaf door with a thin under-top drawer, contained between two pilasters with gilt bronze base feet and female protome capital; the door with a counterweighted mechanism accompanying its movement has a scarabattolo composed of open letter-holding compartments and six small drawers with finely chiseled and gilded leonine protome grips, all concealing complex and numerous secret compartments. Finely chiseled and gilded bronze spouts. The bronzes are of a quality that can be referred to the Manfredini brothers in Milan. Square plinth feet.
