About the Item

Very Fine Large Regency Period Mahogany Wine/Sideboard having an elaborate and complete two tier brass splash rail with scrolled ends, above an inverted breakfront top with gadroon and leaf carving; the central section with one long drawer above four short drawers and flanked on either side by a long drawer above a cupboard, each of which is fitted for the laying down of 18 bottles, the whole supported on four leaf carved scrolled cabriole front legs ending in scroll feet with applied roundels. The treatment of the gadrooned carving is identical to that on a table made for Lord Bellew for Jenkinstown, Co. Kilkenny, (Illustration No.1) labelled by the firm, and the legs are very similar in form to a serving table in Dublin Castle 1812-15 also bearing the trade label of Mack, Gibton & Williams, Illustration No.13. The firm of Mack, Williams and Gibton were established in 1812 at 39 Stafford Street, Dublin and were appointed Upholsterer's & Cabinet Makers to his Majesty, His Excellency the Lord Lieutenant and His Majesty's Board of Works. After the death of John Mack in 1829, the firm continued to trade as Williams and Gibton (1830-1844). They supplied some of the most important public buildings in Ireland, including the Four Courts, the War Office, the Barracks Office, Dublin Castle, the Chapel Royal and the Treasury and Viceregal Lodge. They were also commissioned to produce furniture for many prominent Irish houses such as Ballynegall, Co. Westmeath, Oakley Park, Co. Meath and Strokestown Co. Roscommon. The legs on this piece are derived from George Smith's Cabinetmaker & Upholster's Guide published in 1826
