About the Item

A beautifully made teak sideboard from 1958. The sideboard has been cleaned, sanded and oiled by hand. A wonderfully figured top section holding three drawers which float above a double cupboard below. Drawer fronts are in Black laminate (not painted) for a perfect satin sheen finish. The inventive sliding door design encloses three adjustable shelves. The whole stands on attractive angled legs with adjustable and leveling brass feet. The decoupaged and sealed paper on the drawer and door fronts is Piero Fornasetti's 'Tema E Variazioni' original rare and discontinued print to the door fronts. This beautiful design is timeless and features Fornasetti's muse; the classical opera singer Lina Cavalieri, whose many faces have become so iconic and desirable. This beautiful piece would suit a modern or period interior. G-Plan The company was founded in 1898 by Ebeneezer Gomme. In 1953, Donald Gomme, the designer at E Gomme, decided to produce a range of modern furniture for the entire house which could be bought piece by piece according to budgets. Advertising was part of the plan from the beginning. The name was coined by Doris Gundry of the J. Walter Thompson advertising agency, and the furniture was advertised in magazines and in cinemas direct to the public. Designs were available for several years so people could collect them slowly. All furniture was marked with the distinctive brand mark. Another part of the direct marketing was the showrooms where the public could see the furniture. There were small centres on the country, and "The G Plan Gallery" in Vogue House, St George Street, Hanover Square in London. Donald Gomme left the company in 1958, perhaps the peak of the company's success.
