About the Item
This is a large, old Japanese tansu chest, made in the Meiji period (1860s–1900s).
Crafted from traditional Japanese cedar, this piece embodies the daily life and craftsmanship of the era. The drawer pulls are made of iron, aged over time to a deep, rich patina that enhances the character of the chest.
Its overall design is strikingly simple, free of unnecessary ornamentation—an embodiment of true simplicity. The vertical slat design on the sliding doors creates a beautiful play of light and shadow, changing in expression depending on the viewing angle. Below the doors, a row of drawers provides generous storage space.
Both the sliding doors and drawers operate smoothly, and the piece remains highly functional. As seen in the photos, there are some traces of past insect activity on the top surface, but there are no active pests, and no wood dust is present. In fact, these marks only add to the sense of time passed and lend the piece a distinctive character.
Worn through years of everyday use, yet still commanding a powerful presence, this chest blends both function and poetic aging. It is a wonderful expression of the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi—beauty found in imperfection and transience.
