Paolo Buffa ashwood sideboard with brass handles, Italy 1950s

About the Item

A rare six-drawer sideboard, wooden structure with brass handles, design by Paolo Buffa, Italian craftsmanship, 1950s Every piece of furniture designed by Paolo Buffa reflects a synthesis of the prevailing aesthetic trends of the period, a deep knowledge of materials, and the personal vision that makes the Milanese architect's work instantly recognizable. This six-drawer sideboard, with a wooden frame, presents a rigorously squared volume supported by tall uprights that visually elevate the entire structure. The drawer fronts are adorned with horizontally sculpted decorative elements, which introduce a sense of rhythm and visual tension that harmonizes with the height and taper of the legs. The result is an almost architectural composition, where the material itself—wood—is entrusted with the task of conveying a domestic warmth and human presence, balancing precision with personality. Many of Buffa’s works are one-of-a-kind pieces, created in response to private commissions. His skill as a designer lay in translating clients’ specific needs and desires—not least the aspiration to express their personal identity through furniture—into refined, functional objects, all while maintaining his own distinctive aesthetic language, never eclipsed even in commissioned projects. This sideboard has undergone a professional restoration carried out using traditional methods, in full respect of the original wood tones and finishes.
