Unique Rosewood Cabinet by Vittorio Dassi with Painting by Pietro Toppi, 1955

About the Item

Stunning unique rosewood storage cabinet designed by Vittorio Dassi, Italy with unique hand painted panel signed by the famous Italian artist Pietro Toppi. This cabinet was clearly a unique commission for an important client. The cabinet itself was fabricated by the highly skilled artisans at the 'CONSORZIO ESPOSIZIONE MOBILI CANTU' atelier located in Cantu, Italy, circa 1955. The cabinet still bears the atelier's highly decorative label. This unique cabinet has been in my personal collection since 2014 and I have undertaken some extensive research on the painted panel by Italian artist Pietro Toppi in particular. In 2014 I contacted Tiziano Casartelli who is the foremost expert on Pietro Toppi's oeuvre , I have kept copies of the email correspondence between us., Signor Casartelli was kind enough to contact Pietro Toppi personally and send him detail photos of both the cabinet and his painting , he said he remembered painting this panel in his early twenties but was unsure of the exact date but he confirmed it was definitely sometime during the period 1955-57 which is also very useful in dating the cabinet, he also included the following details on the painting , he said the cabinet was first lacquered in polyester then he painted the picture then a final layer of transparent lacquer was added for protection. I also received two copies of the Italian art magazine 'canturium' as a generous gift from Tizio Casartelli which include two articles written on Pietro Toppi. The rosewood cabinet itself has a beautiful sculptural form and is elegant from all perspectives, with angled door fronts to the upper tier and a beautiful drawer unit with contrasting rosewood and white enamel detailing reminiscent of the work of Gio Ponti who also designed some pieces with Vittorio Dassi This unique cabinet comes complete with original and highly decorative teardrop form keys too, all in all a beautiful, Classic and unique piece of mid-1950s Italian high quality craftsmanship , the unique early Pietro Toppi painting is the cherry on top of the cake. The following quote is taken from an article written in 'la provincia' newspaper on the major retrospective of Pietro Toppi's work which took place at the 'Villa Calvi ' ,Cantu Italy in 2013 on the event of Toppi's 80th birthday. "Pietro Toppi still works in Cantù today: his city celebrates him, on the occasion of his 80th birthday, in the beautiful exhibition at Villa Calvi, curated by architect Tiziano Casartelli, who has the merit of enhancing a very worthy artist. Student of the Brera Academy, professional painter, singer of the work and traditions of a land, lived in the incurable contrast between capital and the work of concrete men in flesh and blood. So a very spontaneous attention to the people who surrounded him, such as farmers and bricklayers: the humble of Manzoni's memory, to whom the future of humanity is handed over. Hence the title of the exhibition, "Painting as a social commitment" could not be happier. "I have always painted bricklayers, people who worked, builders - says Pietro Toppi himself - It seemed to me that they best expressed the characteristics of concrete life, the experiences of a suffering humanity". Thus one of the most significant works exhibited in the exhibition, the "Transport of the wounded in the construction site", as Casartelli grasps in the presentation of the exhibition, reveals the relationship with the central message of Christian Revelation, the deposition from the Cross, the saving hope of Redemption."

Beautiful and super rare 'Cassapanca di buona memoria' (chest of beautiful memories) by famed Italian artist Emilio Tadini (1927-2002). Tadini was invited to exhibit his paintings at the Venice Biennale in both 1978 and 1982 and was a true polymath in that he was also equally impressive as an artist, sculptor and poet. Umberto Eco, in a eulogy, said of him "a painter who writes, a writer who paints." This design was a main feature in the September 1987 issue of Casa Vogue...
