About the Item

Viennese Neues Wohnen Sideboard with Marquetry Landscape, c. 1926 This rare walnut-veneered sideboard, attributed to Rudolf Lorenz’s firm Kunst und Wohnung, is an evocative example of Viennese applied arts during the interwar period. Created around 1926, the piece reflects the artisanal richness of earlier Secessionist traditions as well as the shifting sensibilities of the Neues Wohnen movement, which favored layered, lived-in interiors over rigid aesthetic unity. This sideboard is distinguished by its bold, symbolic marquetry: two doors depicting stylized landscapes with trees, birds, and water, crafted from Hungarian ash and other carefully selected veneers. The ash grain, for instance, poetically represents the rippling surface of a pond. Though not intricately detailed, the intarsia work is striking in its composition and tonal contrast, fusing craft precision with pictorial clarity. Lorenz founded the company with his wife, Malvine, in 1919. It was later known as Kunst und Wohnung, R. Lorenz GesmbH. The company operated in Vienna's Josefstadt district. The company was part of a larger design culture shaped by architects such as Oskar Strnad and Josef Frank, who questioned the ideal of the Gesamtkunstwerk. As Christopher Long notes in Josef Frank: Life and Work, Frank and his contemporaries sought a more open, flexible interior language—"a resonant harmony" of disparate elements, as Paul Wlach described it. This sideboard embodies that ethos. It invites use and reinterpretation; its decorative program is both modern and historic. This is likely why it originated in Vienna's XIII District (Hietzing), a hub of cultural sophistication and domestic experimentation during the 1920s. A rare, sculptural artifact, it speaks to the transitional moment in Austrian design when ornament became symbolic and interiors began to reflect their owners' personalities. Located in Ulm, DE
This exquisite Art Deco sideboard from France, dating to the 1930s, is a masterwork of early 20th-century decorative arts — striking in both silhouette and craftsmanship. Its inwardly curved front sets it apart: a sculptural gesture that draws the gaze to its center, where a breathtaking marquetry medallion in warm-toned fruitwoods unfurls like a blooming bouquet. Accents in polished brass punctuate the composition with refined brilliance. Crafted from a symphony of richly grained woods, the surface shimmers under a lustrous, hand-polished French shellac finish, applied in the traditional manner to enhance depth and clarity. The sideboard rests on a sleek, black lacquered plinth that subtly contrasts the warmth of the wood and reinforces its architectural presence. Behind four doors — framed by veneered sunburst patterns that radiate from the center — lie generous storage compartments, beautifully finished inside and perfectly suited for dining essentials, collectibles, or even media equipment. The dimensions of this statement piece — 190 cm (74.8”) wide, 97.5 cm (38.4”) high, and 46 cm (18.1”) deep — make it a commanding yet elegant presence in both classic and contemporary interiors. Whether used as a buffet in a dining room, a console in an entryway, or a stylish bar or media cabinet, this original 1930s Art Deco commode...
