Rare American (New York) Chippendale Mahogany Tray Top Tea Table, 18th Century

About the Item

A rare and desirable form, with its tray top and the carving finished in order to be seen from all sides, the cabriole legs terminate in very well carved ball and claw feet. The knees are carved with acanthus, in a manner closely related to Irish tea table designs. Attributed to New York, ca. 1760-1780, this handsome and boldly carved dish top tea table features a typical design element of New York Chippendale furniture: gadrooning all the way around. Good condition, with typical signs of age: some expected separations and irregularities to the wood and surface, one leg with a well done splice repair to the lower half. Formerly with casters, since removed. Provenance: sold at Parke-Bernet Galleries, NY in 1950 from the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Norvin H. Green, subsequently sold at Christie’s, N.Y. June 1990 (original catalogs will accompany the table), and since then it has been in two private collections.
