George II Tilt Top Tea Table, With Pie Crust Top

About the Item

A fine ca. 1760 English single board mahogany tilt top tea table, the pedestal base carved as a substantial and handsome fluted column resting on finely carved downswept legs with carved knees and terminating in elongated ball and claw feet. Birdcage retains original catch, latch and pin are later. Good condition, with typical wear from age and use and some indentations to the top. H: 27 ¾ Diameter: 29 ½

    Refinished. Wear consistent with age and use. Some indentations/distress to the top where something heavy was scooted around at some point. Polished over and softened with age.

    A handsome medium toned cherry three board top with a tight moulded edge, resting on a baluster base with multiple turnings, most notably the banded sphere anchoring the standard. The birdcage has a nicely formed pin and separate catch plate. Robust downswept cabriole legs terminate in substantial “horseshoe” pad feet. Attractive timber with an open grain pattern. Good antique condition, with a good even finish, typical signs of age and wear: some small losses (a divot to one horseshoe, and a smaller one to the edge of the top), dings, a tight age crack through the heartwood of the center board of the top.     A vasiform baluster pedestal with birdcage sits atop a very graceful tripod base with each leg terminating in a slender ball and claw foot. An especially robust forged iron spider is fitted beneath.
