19th Century Italian Specimen Pietra Dura Table Attributed To Giacomo Raffaelli

About the Item

One of the most important early nineteenth century specimen hardstone table tops ever created, with 373 specimens, mounted on a beautifully designed and constructed base by Gillow. Magnificent 19th Century Italian Specimen Pietra Dura Table Top Attributed To Giacomo Raffaelli, set within a carved Rosewood Centre Table Attributed To Gillows. This incredibly important table incorporates one of the most exquisite specimen hardstone inlaid tops ever created, as befits the master lapidary designer and worker Giacomo Raffaelli. With three hundred & seventy three specimens of the most beautiful hardstones, agates, jaspers and semi-precious stones, superbly inlaid with incredibly fine detail into a solid Portoro marble top. This majestic table’s base is carved from & veneered in richly coloured Rosewood. The carving and sculpting of the base, firmly attributed to Gillows, is amongst the finest you could ever wish to see, giving this palatial table the most beautiful, elegant & statuesque of form. Hardstone & Semi-Precious Specimens include: Lapis Lazuli Amethyst Malachite Oberstein Agates Carnelian Chalcedony Labradorite Aventurine Rhodonite Sicilian Jaspers Volcanic Porphyries Marbles include: Portoro Rosso Antico Belgium Black Giacomo Raffaelli ( Rome 1753-1836 ) was heir to a family tradition of glass manufacturing dating back to the mid-17th century. He achieved fame as a glass mosaicist, and contemporary sources acclaimed him as the inventor of new techniques employing micromosaics in objets de vertu such as boxes, small plaques, and jewellery. While Raffaelli’s experimentations in the mosaic genre earned him international success, his fascination with the mineral world also developed, indeed his talents as a lapidary artist were soon equally acclaimed. This table top exemplifies the taste, technique and material of inlaid work produced by Raffaelli in the first few years of the 19th century. The vast array of specimens, selected and displayed with a brio at once intellectual and artistic, perfectly represents the spirit of Roman Neoclassicism. The choice of materials recalls the famous collection created by the lawyer and lapidary expert Faustino Corsi (1771-1846) and later described in his Catalogo ragionato d'una collezione di pietre antiche (reprinted in three editions in 1828, 1833, 1845), which stimulated both specimen collecting and marble furniture there. Indeed this table testifies to the precocious passion for stone Raffaelli shared with Corsi, who held the mosaicist in great esteem and mentioned him in his treatise, describing some of the iconic minerals preserved in his Cabinet of Natural History. Raffaelli aspired to obtain more obscure specimens, not yet acquired by other collectors, to make his collections unique and radically different to the regimented specimen tops so beloved of earlier Grand Tourists. The exquisite design and rare specimens within this stunning top, define this this masterpiece as Museum quality. It is the absolute finest & most superbly inlaid you will ever see. Approximate Size: Height: 30 inches Diameter: 39.5 inches
