About the Item

This beautiful bankers table or merchants table originates in Switzerland and dates circa 1800. The tabletop and drawer were made from fruitwood, the legs are pine. The drawer's front has been decorated with many circles. The table has a warm honey color finish with a soft gloss. The table shows many marks, dents and wormholes throughout but has a solid structure. However there were no signs of active woodworm, the piece was professionally treated for the woodworm as a precaution. The table has been used intensively througout the years. The distressed look and built up patina adds great character to the table. This is a typical merchant's table given its size and drawer. The size was this to create a certain distance between the person paying and the recipient. The payment would go in the drawer and then the drawer would slide towards the recipient. The money was put in the drawer so the amount being paid was private. The table has been cleaned in our workshop. Minor stains on the top were removed and the old wax layers were slightly heated and buffed. It now has a beautiful soft gloss and great patina. Structurally the table is in very good condition. A new protective wax coat was applied.
