Even a coffee table can become a piece of art if it can transcend typological limitations. Fredrikson Stallard deal with the issue by the strength of the material to be bent and shaped. The result is a completely new form, marked by an important and expressionistic depression in the centre of the top.
PATRIK FREDRIKSON and IAN STALLARD began their collaboration in 1995 and have since become internationally recognized as leading exponents of British avant-garde design. They are well known for their ability to translate their creativity into simple yet emotionally engaging fine artwork and furniture.
Their cutting edge, conceptually rigorous work has been regularly discussed and praised in the design press and is sought after by discerning collectors and furniture producers.
Their work has been acquired by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, twice by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the French National Art Collection, and shown at the Design Museum in London, MoMA and the Museum of Art and Design in New York. Fusto oval coffee table II is the new addition to the modular system collection in ultra high performing cement mortar, named Fusto. The sturdy, column-shaped leg supporting the oval top is marked by a grooved texture recalling ancient Roman and Greek architecture, making this coffee table unique.
UHPC tabletop and base colored in the mixture and sandblasted. Each item is hand treated and is protected with water repellent products to reduce the absorption of oily substances and to minimise the making of stains.
Fusto is the series that introduces the new design approach. As in classical architecture, Fusto is the column that holds tables, consoles, bookcases and pedestals. Volumes and proportions are integrated in a timeless geometry, enriched with facets that make the colour vibrate in a game of lights and shadows.

It takes an expert's eye to recognize the beauty and potential of root and burl treasures that are found in the wild. Skilled artisans then transform these natural wonders into functional and unique works of art China’s root carving tradition dates far back to the Warring States period, over 2000 years ago.
This desk or table called “Chaji” by Chinese can be associated as early as the late Ming Dynasty,17th century. By the 20th century, China’s entrepreneurial furniture makers began crafting more exotic tea and coffee tables and chairs from singular huge roots- some reaching ten feet in diameter. This superb example is among the best work of art to come out of a Fujian family workshop and the private collection of the president of the shop.. in many decades. Low tables that were initially used as tea tables or coffee tables have been around since at least the mid- to late-1800s. Early coffee tables surfaced in Victorian-era England, likely influenced by the use of tea tables in Japanese tea gardens. In the United States, furniture makers worked to introduce low, long tables into their offerings as the popularity of coffee and “coffee breaks” took hold during the late 19th century and early 20th century.
It didn’t take long for coffee tables and cocktail tables to become a design staple and for consumers to recognize their role in entertaining no matter what beverages were being served. Originally, these tables were as simple as they are practical — as high as your sofa and made primarily of wood. In recent years, however, metal, glass and plastics have become popular in coffee tables and cocktail tables, and design hasn’t been restricted to the conventional low profile, either.
Visionary craftspeople such as Paul Evans introduced bold, geometric designs that challenge the traditional idea of what a coffee table can be. The elongated rectangles and wide boxy forms of Evans’s desirable Cityscape coffee table, for example, will meet your needs but undoubtedly prove imposing in your living space.

Both the table itself and what you put on it should align with the overall design of the room, not just by what you think looks fashionable in isolation. According to interior designer Tamara Eaton, the material of your vintage coffee table is something you need to consider. “With a glass coffee table, you also have to think about the surface underneath, like the rug or floor,” she says. “With wood and stone tables, you think about what’s on top.”
