About the Item

Branch Coffee Table by Philipp Aduatz One of a Kind Dimensions: D 51.5 x W 112 x H 44.5cm Materials: Wood, flax fibers, biobased epoxy resin. Austrian product designer Philipp Aduatz has launched a new furniture collection that attempts to break from conventional design, incorporating wood, flax fibers, and a biobased epoxy resin as a fiber-reinforced composite material. The collection, which includes a chair, a side table, a coffee table, and a lamp, reflects Aduatz's dedication to pushing the boundaries of experimental design. Aduatz's approach involves combining natural fibers with wood and a partially biobased resin to maximize the use of renewable materials, resulting in a composite material with a minimal carbon footprint. For the table, Aduatz sourced branches from the forest near his studio in Weidling, Lower Austria, which were then carefully wrapped with flax fibers and infused with dyed resin through an experimental process, resulting in each piece being a unique sculpture. Over a decade ago, designers were interested in composite materials like carbon fiber reinforced polymers for their technical properties and aesthetic appeal. Recent trends favor environmental considerations, shifting towards natural and renewable fibers like flax, hemp, or sisal, as well as the use of epoxy resins made with an increasing proportion of natural vegetable oils, such as linseed or soybean oil. The combination of a partially biobased epoxy resin with natural fibers results in a versatile and enduring biocomposite material customizable to specific requirements. Composite materials derived from renewable resources offer various advantages, including lower carbon emissions and energy consumption compared to fully petroleum-based alternatives. The technical attributes of fiber-reinforced composite materials provide a superior strength-to-weight ratio, making them suitable for lightweight applications due to their high strength and stiffness at minimal weight. Aduatz's use of a thermoset biobased matrix expands creative possibilities, allowing for an experimental process that embraces the material combination, ensuring a long-lasting result. The underlying concept of this project is to venture into innovative design territories for composite materials, emphasizing a commitment to environmental responsibility through an experimental furniture series. Philipp Aduatz's biocomposite furniture collection promises to captivate Milan Design Week 2024, embodying a fusion of artistry, innovation, and sustainable design practices. Vienna-based Designer Philipp Aduatz (born 1982) creates limited-edition functional objects that are highly sculptural in nature. Working with innovative materials and fabrication technologies, Aduatz is very much influenced by scientific matters such as chemistry, physics, and material technologies. His process combines traditional craft concepts and techniques with cutting-edge implements such as 3D printing, 3D laser scanning, CNC milling, and Rapid Prototyping. The experimentation with different materials and their behavior is an important part of his research at the intersection of design and sculpture. Greatly influenced by sculptors such as Constantin Brancusi and Tony Cragg, the designer aims to develop a distinct language of form in each of his pieces, encouraging a new discourse between the object and its user or viewer.

Borghese Coffee Table Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance
By Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance
Located in Geneve, CH
Borghese coffee table by Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance Dimensions: 35 x 139 x 64 cm Solid oak tabletop, steel structure Mat Black stained wood Biography Not wishing to simply produce or be rational about a product. Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance prefers that each of his projects has its own unique scenario, nourished without distinction between uses, forms, materials or aesthetics. For him, curves and straight lines, sensuality and strictness interact in confrontations that are conducive to create meaning and awaken our senses. Through his desire to breath life into both the objects and spaces he designs, Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance views each project as an organic form that will grow over time with its user, almost like a natural element that can Challenge human order or disorder. Originally, Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance was a sculptor, preoccupied with each work he created by a story and intimate link with nature that he felt the need to retranscribe by using his hands. But soon the idea of stirring emotions in others by creating useful forms became an evident path for someone who loves the beautiful as much as the functional and harmony as much as social responsibility. So he turned to design… Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance often compares his approach to tsubo niwa, the tiny garden at the center of a traditional Japanese house. Like an organic pulse in a profession dedicated to meeting the demands of an industry, a market or a specific client, he is as ready to design objects with inspired lines for manufacturers (Bernhardt Design, Ceccotti Collezioni, Cinna, Ligne Roset, La Chance, Petite Friture, Tacchini, Zanotta…) as he is to imagine harmonious living areas (Senderens, Air France Lounges, Ciel de Paris, Meurice Oenotheque, Transumance Chalet, Lounge…) or even to define a product image or showcase for a famous brand (Paco Rabanne, YSL Beauty, Perrier-Jouët,). Thus in 2015 Montblanc associated its name with Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance, entrusting him with the architectural plans of the company’s 500 boutiques worldwide. His unique approach has led him to conceive exceptional objects that have been presented in the Pierre bergere gallery in Brussels and the BSL gallery in Paris. He has participated in prestigious events like the AD Interiors exhibition at Paris’ Musée des Arts Decoratifs in 2013 and, more recently, the AD collections exhibition, also in Paris. His creative meanderings have led him to initiate a collaboration with the Neal Feay...

Missisquoi 01 Coffee Table (Edition 4 of 13) by Simon Johns
By Simon Johns
Located in East-Bolton, Quebec
Missisquoi 01 is a numbered and asymmetrical two part coffee or cocktail table, with a space that divides it as the river divides the Missisquoi Valley. The black ashwood was felled, milled and dried near the studio, and the stone is from the river's banks. The stone and plank that support the two parts form a continuous axis end to end, through the divide. The beauty of the Brutalist natural stone contrasts and converses with the delicate craftsmanship of the wood plateau...
