About the Item

Gary Magakis’ blackened steel and textured/patinated bronze low table epitomizes the sculptor’s distinct approach to creating bold and dense geometric forms that simultaneously exude an elegant, buoyant aesthetic of Modernism. Following Magakis' unique series of hand-sculpted cantilevered consoles, the artist's unique low table is composed of asymmetrical geometric metal planes that allow the glass top to appear as if floating, depending upon the angle at which it is viewed. Seen through the glass top, the smooth and textured piece is at once functional low table base as well as unique sculpture. Inspired by Constructivism and the cantilevered rooms by Frank Lloyd Wright, Magakis channels architectural elements in design while tapering each of his forms uniquely. Though each of the table's sections appear sharp at first glance, they are actually gracefully curvilinear, as the entire piece lacks any straight lines or edges. Magakis’ series of unique, sculptural furniture was recently featured in the Financial Times’ How to Spend It, April 2015. As the artist works on a commission basis, custom dimensionality as well as finishes can be accommodated for a bespoke piece, including consoles, dining tables, and low tables.
