Mid-Century 1960s Vintage Jorge Zalszupin Romana Coffee Table

About the Item

Jorge Zalszupin (1922–2020) was a Polish-born architect and designer who became a pivotal figure in Brazilian modernism. Born Jerzy Zalszupin in Warsaw, he fled Nazi-occupied Poland during World War II, seeking refuge in Romania, where he studied architecture. After the war, he worked on reconstruction projects in France before emigrating to Brazil in 1949, inspired by the country's modernist movement and the works of architects like Oscar Niemeyer. In Brazil, Zalszupin established himself as an architect and furniture designer, founding L'Atelier in São Paulo in 1959. His designs are renowned for blending European modernist principles with Brazilian materials and aesthetics, often featuring geometric lines, organic shapes, and the use of native woods like jacaranda and rosewood. His furniture complemented the modern architecture of the time, including contributions to significant projects in Brasília. This coffee table demonstrates Jorge Zalszupin’s unique sensibility that drew inspiration from both European and Brazilian design. The form of the table is simple and understated, creating an overall sense of harmony. The curved lines of the legs are balanced by the solid geometry of the tabletop. Made of precious materials like caviuna wood and marble, the piece has a feeling of luxury and timelessness. Zalszupin pieces were renowned for their exquisite level of finish, seen here in small details like brass buttons affixed to the tabletop.
