About the Item

c. 1960s, USA, a rare pair of Harvey Probber corner tables with Macassar ebony veneer tops and dark stained tapering round wood legs. The triangular tables have a curved longside edge. The tables are unmarked and likely a custom order. Harvey Probber (1922-2003) was born in Brooklyn, New York, and designed his first sofa at age 16, selling it for $10. By the time he finished high school, he was selling sketches of furniture to companies in Manhattan. Probber was an autodidact, having very little formal training at a time when most designers had formal architectural or art degrees. He did, however, take a few night classes at Pratt Institute and had on- the-job training in furniture production while working for Trade Upholstery. After serving in the Coast Guard during the 1940s, Probber worked briefly as a cabaret singer, but by 1945 he had opened Harvey Probber, Inc. Realizing that post-war families wanted more flexibility in their homes and their lifestyles, he was the frst to introduce modular seating. His pieces had understated modern lines combined with decorative hardware, rare woods and sumptuous upholstery, sometimes in surprisingly bright colors. Probber was not a household name during his lifetime as were some of his contemporaries, but his furniture is considered highly collectible today. Dimensions: 21"h x 51"l x 44"w Condition: Good, small areas of rubbing to finish on tops, a few edge nicks, but overall very clean with an even unfaded wood color. Show well ready to place. Located in Culver City, CA
These cocktail tables are fabulous! Designed by Percival Lafer a Brazilian furniture designer known for his innovative and modern designs. One of his most iconic creations is the Percival Lafer folding table, which was first introduced in the 1970s. The Percival Lafer folding tables are versatile functional pieces of furniture that can be used in a variety of settings. It is designed to be lightweight and easy to move, with a simple folding mechanism that allows it to be set up or stored away quickly and easily. The table features a sleek and minimalist design, with a rosewood parquette type design that featured different pieces of rosewood arranged at different heights, creating an uneven, heavily textured, almost brutalist look-- topped with glass. This eye catching design is one of his most iconic designs. A wonderful piece that can be easily folded and stored away if necessary. This table would look incredible in any mid century modern, Brazilian modern, or contemporary home. Place both tables together to have a larger functional coffee table. We currently have this table in the gallery alongside a Sergio Rodrigues sofa as well as a Jorge Zalszupin mesa...
