About the Item

Coffee Table Directional Model PE-208. The Cityscape line for the Directional Furniture Company, was the result of Directional's partnering with Paul Evans to create a more hand crafted product. It was the last great series created by Evans. Instead of the raised squares and rectangles seen in Evans' early sculptured pieces, In Cityscape, the raised squares and rectangles became flattened reflective panels. the use of flat shiny elements allowed Evans to produce endless surface patterns, some in all chrome or all brass, while others were a combination of the two. The panels allowed for a proliferation of pieces with endless patterns that were achievable in greater production numbers. In 1971 Directional introduced Evans’ streamlined brass and chrome Cityscape I series, with it's smooth reflective surfaces notably different from the crusty, painted, textured surfaces of his sculpted steel works from the 60's. In the Cityscape series, Evans divided the surfaces of his lighting and furniture with polished and brushed squares, triangles and rectangles in various patterns. Each piece from the cityscape line is handcrafted with each piece of patchwork fitted precisely. This made the pieces quite laborious to produce and each unique both in overall dimensions and design patterns. As with many successful designs from the mid-century, copycat versions abound in the market. Cheaply made copies, have precut pieces of metal, set patterns of arrangement and overally poor quality. This table with it's very spare two part base is one of my favorites from the series. It's timeless design works well in any interior. Also in inventory is a Cityscape table lamp, both of these pieces come from the same Park Avenue Estate.
