About the Item

Pierre Jeanneret coffee table Chandigarh in stained teak and glass, 1960's Pierre Jeanneret rectangular PJ-TB-05-A coffee table with glass tabletop, circa 1960. The glass tabletop is supported by a pair of «V” shaped legs bearing an open cabinet. This coffee table is not only a fantastic piece, it’s a design icon. It is raw in its simplicity, embodying and expressing the pure ideas of Jeanneret. The V-shaped (or A-shaped) legs are a very typical element for Chandigarh items. The top has two layers: the first is a glass layer underneath the wooden part, where books and other elements can be displayed. Pierre Jeanneret created sensual designs that are not only timeless but historical. The patinated teak is showing traces of age and uniqueness. Find the matching Jeanneret chairs in another listing. Bibliography : Le Corbusier Pierre Jeanneret, Chandigarh, India, Galerie Patrick Seguin, ppg. 238-241, 287 Le Corbusier Pierre Jeanneret: The Indian Adventure, Design-Art-Architecture, Touchaleaume and Moreau, pg. 589 Though overshadowed by his cousin Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret was a visionary of modernist architecture and design. Together, the pair pioneered a new aesthetic vocabulary that placed function and order over embellishment—Jeanneret’s work imbuing the strict geometry of modernism with energetic diagonals and lighter materials like cane and wood. A consistent innovator, he collaborated with Charlotte Perriand on experiments in aluminum and wood, and developed prefabricated housing with Jean Prouvé. In the early 1950s Jeanneret joined his cousin in Chandigarh, India, where they embarked on a massive urban-planning project, laying out the city and designing low-cost buildings and furniture. Though Corbusier abandoned the project halfway through, Jeanneret remained for 15 years as the project’s chief architect. The city remains a masterpiece of the modern vision.
