Console Table with Carved Waist in Jumu Wood, Late Qing Cinnabar Finish

About the Item

A refined Chinese console table with a cinnabar-toned lacquer finish and intricate openwork carving along the waist and spandrels, likely dating to the late Qing Dynasty period, circa early 20th century. Crafted from jumu (elm wood), the table showcases the fine joinery and decorative detail typical of the period, from the angular legs to the pierced scrollwork apron with stylized ruyi and cloud motifs. The open fretwork continues around the upper section of the frame, adding a sense of lightness to its otherwise architectural form. The table’s warm reddish-brown lacquer has mellowed over time to a soft cinnabar hue, a tone traditionally associated with both status and auspiciousness in Chinese interiors. Slight wear to the top and surface only enhances its age and authenticity. Well-proportioned for use as a hallway, entry, or sofa table, this piece offers a strong visual impact without sacrificing function. Whether displayed on its own or layered with ceramics or scholars' objects, it reads as both decorative and historically grounded.
