Dragon Console Table or Hallway Table Black Dyed Plywood and Aluminium

About the Item

Caoshu (known as Chinese cursive brush-writing) is the most abbreviated typeface in the calligraphy. The free flow resembles the appearance of a dragon that seems to fly through the sky. Chulan Kwak, inspired by this movement, restructured the 2D stroke of Caoshu, which seemed to run the blank space rhythmically, into the 3D structure. He has created ‘Cursive Structure’ that functions as well as creating a contrast between the object and margin of space that changes according to the viewpoint. In order to realize this free curved form, Chulan Kwak applied the technique of paper craft to woodwork. He first created the form through 3D software and then unfolded it to extract the accurate drawing. He used this method to precisely cut thin and bendable plywood with a CNC machine and to adhere the edges of each parts correctly in order. Through the combination of the digital tool and craftsmanship, he was able to create the solid forms of free curves in the real world, such as those made in the virtual space. They were finished after dyeing with Muck(ink used for Chinese brush-writing) for the deep black color.

By Zhipeng Tan
Located in Beverly Hills, CA
The table is made in polished stainless steel and is customizable upon request. Lead time is 30-45 days for current design and up to 75 days for custom piece. The artist Zhipeng Tan is a self-taught sculptor with an Industrial Design degree from the China Academy of Art. His practice focuses on delivering his sculptural vision to a broader audience through art furniture. Most of Tan’s sculptures are characters in his imagery utopian world who are allowed to be childish, oversize, less than perfect without prejudice. Taking the abstract forms of water, plants, oversized insects, animals, skeletons as the base, Tan expends his ideas to create each figure. Inspired by Joan Miro, Henry Moore, Constantin Brancusi, Tan's sculptural forms are often organic, with a slightly surreal quality, while maintaining functionality. Most Tan's works are hand-sculpted in one to one scale in clay, then use multiple ways to archive the final work, including lost-wax casting, hammering. Tan’s practice continues to express his utopian world through his pieces; he is keen to lead the art furniture movement in China. Gallery All is the commissioning gallery of Tan Zhipeng...
