About the Item

A rare and finely crafted English wig table in mahogany, dating to circa 1830. This unusual semicircular form was designed for the storage and maintenance of wigs, a practice still common in formal and theatrical settings well into the 19th century. The open crescent-shaped top centers around a fitted wooden rack with three circular holders, originally intended to accommodate wig blocks or stands. The scalloped handle support and ringed bases are both decorative and highly functional, enabling organized display and access. The tabletop is framed along the rear with brass supports topped with turned finials, reaching a total height of 49 inches. The main table surface stands at 29 inches high and is supported by four boldly turned and tapered legs, each terminating in brass casters for mobility. Measuring 78 inches wide by 39.5 inches deep, this piece offers dramatic scale and sculptural presence. Whether used in a dressing room, entryway, or adapted as a conversation-starting console or display piece, it reflects both the elegance and eccentric specificity of 19th-century English furniture design. A rare functional antique with strong architectural character.
