French 19th Century Carpenter’s Workbench

About the Item

This French 19th century workbench is a fascinating relic of technology from before the assembly line, a hybrid of artisanal rusticity and industrial innovations. The richly-grained beech wood top is patinated by saws and hand tools necessary to the carpenter’s craft, punctured with a hole in the center to clamp down an iron rod known as a “holdfast”. To the right side of the top is a removable “dog” (a square wood tool with a row of nails) which also functions to hold the artisan’s project in place. One small drawer is suspended from the right side. Four square legs support the top and a trough-like lower shelf, finished with a studded metal trim around the feet. A large vise grip projects from the left leg, opening by an iron lever to unscrew the bolt–a great feature should one want to repurpose this piece as a console table for an entryway. The awe-inspiring workbench appeals to multiple design tastes, from brutalism to industrial to primitive for its charming imperfections. Cleaned and polished with a French paste wax, ready for your interior. Please view the detailed images. Top surface: 12 ½” deep Projection of the vise: 4”
