About the Item

‘La Barca’ extendable dining table designed by Piero De Martini in 1975 for Cassina featuring a beautiful honey hued oak. La Barca means Boat. Both the legs and top extend to create a larger surface area the scale of a large dining table; when folded in - this serves elegantly as a console table. Piero De Martini, born in Milan in 1939, is an architect and designer. After graduating in Architecture in 1964 he started working in residential architecture and conservation. Since 1969 he has dealt with residential and furniture design and in 1975 he begins working with Cassina, marking the beginning of the furnishing system “La Barca”, ash wood objects, set together in different ways creating sofas, tables and beds. Founded by Cesare and Umberto Cassina in 1927 in Meda, Cassina inaugurated industrial design in Italy in the 1950s according to a totally new logic that marked the transition from craft to serial production. With an attitude of research and innovation, Cassina combines technology with traditional craftsmanship.
