About the Item

A refined and architecturally elegant rosewood console by celebrated Milanese architect and designer Paolo Buffa. Long and precisely proportioned, this piece features Buffa’s hallmark balance of modernist discipline and neoclassical grace. The design includes tapered legs with brass sabots, two seamlessly integrated side drawers, and a central lidded compartment adorned with an inlaid marquetry tazza—a subtle, classical gesture that speaks to Buffa’s reverence for tradition within a modern framework. The console is topped with a stunning slab of original red marble, richly figured and dramatically veined. Due to the length and narrow proportions, the marble top has developed a few cracks, which do not affect its function and contribute to its sense of age and authenticity. Along the back edge, a discreet ¾-inch recessed gap suggests that the piece was originally intended to be paired with a mirror—typical of Buffa’s more elaborate commissions for dressing rooms or entry vestibules. Buffa (1903–1970), a graduate of the Politecnico di Milano, stood apart from his contemporaries—like Gio Ponti—by embracing Rationalist principles grounded in craft and historical reference. While modernist in outlook, Buffa rejected the cold austerity of pure functionalism, instead producing furniture of exquisite proportion, refined ornament, and luxurious materiality. His work embodied the spirit of Milanese design, where both fashion and interiors have long been defined by understated elegance, impeccable craftsmanship, and quiet opulence. Milan's elite clientele—aristocrats, industrialists, and cosmopolitan tastemakers—sought pieces like this through the city’s top architects and ateliers. Designers such as Tomaso Buzzi, Melchiorre Bega, and Ignazio Gardella often sourced Buffa's pieces for interiors that merged classical structure with modern restraint, creating rooms that were richly detailed but never overwrought. This console is documented in I Mobili di Paolo Buffa by Roberta Lietti and Roberto Rizzi, and Buffa’s legacy has been widely celebrated, including in Architectural Digest (June 2013), for his unique ability to bridge Italy’s storied past with its postwar design renaissance. Whether used in a formal entry, a living space, or as a dramatic vanity, this piece functions as both a sculptural anchor and a functional heirloom, embodying the Milanese tradition of thoughtful luxury and timeless design.
