About the Item

Venice, Louis XV Mezzanine cabinet Walnut burl, 131 x 51 x 68 cm The mezzanine, or mezzanine floor, in architecture is a particular normally lowered level of the building, usually located between the ground floor and the second floor and not included in the total floor calculation. Historically, it is a level intended to house services and, in noble palaces, also staff quarters. The presence of the mezzanine is often due to the need to connect floors placed at different elevations such as may be the roof slab of the ground floor funds or warehouses and the levels at different elevations found on other sides of the building. However, the case of the presence of the mezzanine floor due to reasons of architectural composition of the façade is not uncommon, as the reduced interstorey can be used, among other things, to delineate a physical boundary between different functions of the building. It is precisely because of the unique conformation of this architectural space that the unusual shape of this beautiful, low, elongated, Louis XV-style briar cabinet is due. Louis XV style in the decorative arts, was inspired by naturalistic forms, favoring curved lines and asymmetrical compositions; it elaborated the characters of Rococo taste that had already matured during the brief transitional period during which the Regency style had established itself.

17th century Crucifix Measures: Boxwood, 42 cm high x 8 x 14 The sculpture depicting the crucified Christ examined here represents a refined example of seventeenth-century cabinetry in boxwood. The figure of Christ, now dead on the cross, is part of a precious artistic choreography with the structure of the cross and its pedestal, both decorated with tortoiseshell mirrors, ivory threads to emphasize the structure of the cross and elements in ebonized and carved wood to highlight the architectural structure of the pedestal. The departure of Christ is evident from the lowered head, from the open hands...
