About the Item

A distilled example of De Carli’s organic-structural language: the top flares to blade-like points while the apron resolves into four tapered, splayed legs through soft, continuous radii. A deep central drawer is invisibly integrated in the fascia; the whole reads as a single, flowing volume rather than assembled parts. Recently finished with a hand-rubbed shellac, the surface shows a luminous depth and a refined, period-appropriate sheen. Light, honest signs of age are present. On the back there is a discreet, professional repair at an old knot that had opened over time—stable and well executed. Designer note Carlo De Carli (1910–1999) was a pivotal Italian architect and educator. A Politecnico di Milano graduate (1934), he later taught and served as Dean, shaping generations of designers with a focus on the interplay of space, material and the human body. After an early collaboration with Gio Ponti, he established his own studio; his innovative work was taken up by leading Italian manufacturers, bridging craftsmanship and industry. Literature (for similar examples) • Roberto Aloi, Esempi di Arredamento Moderno di Tutto il Mondo: Sale da Pranzo, Milan, 1953, pl. 203–204 • Irene de Guttry & Maria Paola Maino, Il Mobile Italiano degli Anni ’40 e ’50, Bari, 1992, p. 157 Condition Very good vintage condition; conservative refinishing in shellac; minor wear consistent with age; small stabilized repair at the rear (knot). Ready to place.
