CM 178 Desk in oak and metal by Pierre Paulin, Thonet, 1957

About the Item

CM 178 Desk in oak and metal by Pierre Paulin, Thonet, 1957 Born in 1927, Pierre Paulin enrolled at the end of the war at the Camondo school where his artistic and technical qualities were quickly noticed by his teacher Maxime Old who encouraged him to enter the studio of Marcel Gascoin, one of the creators of the UAM. At the end of this first experience, he joined the decoration department of Galeries Lafayette where, thanks to the director of the Masters Geneviève Pons, he discovered the work of the Americans, in particular the Eames, Bertoia, Nelson and Albini. From 1953, he wanted to create his own furniture but could not find a publisher. With the financial support of his father, he publishes himself and exhibits at the Salon des Arts Ménagers. His creations were noticed there and he soon collaborated with Thonet-France to design desks and seats, including his first monocoque chair. At the end of the 1950s, he was recruited by the Dutch company Artifort, which made him one of its privileged collaborators. There, he continued his research on both form and technique. This collaboration will continue until 1975, with the publication of iconic models created during this period and which have never ceased to be produced since. In 1967, he met Jean Coural, administrator of the Mobilier National. Then begins a regular collaboration with the Mobilier National, thanks to which Pierre Paulin will continue his prospective research on modern techniques and materials. From 1975, he founded ADSA with Maia Paulin and Marc Lebailly then launched, in the early 80s, a new collection of furniture that he offered in limited edition. Installed from the 90s in the Cévennes, he nevertheless continues to be involved in numerous re-edition projects and carries out new orders for the Mobilier National. He passed away in 2009.

  • Desk in Oak and Oak Plywood by Marcel Gascoin, 1949
    By Marcel Gascoin
    Located in PARIS, FR
Desk in oak and oak plywood by Marcel Gascoin, 1949 Marcel Gascoin is the main representative of a French design born after the Second World War, with the reconstruction of destroyed cities. Born in Le Havre in 1907, the young Marcel followed in the footsteps of his father - workshop manager in a practical school, carpentry section - by attending the applied arts section of the École des Beaux-Arts du Havre, then the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. There he met Henri Sauvage who encouraged him to turn to modern furniture. He became a carpenter and cabinetmaker, and from then on he never ceased to adapt the container to the content, as he said himself. Recommended by Robert Mallet-Stevens in 1930, he participated in the exhibition of the Union of Modern Artists. Four years later, he participated in a competition for the design of a boat cabin, which allowed him to meet Jean Prouvé, with whom he would work. In 1938, he participated in the Salon des Arts Ménagers and created a line of storage furniture with a particular design that found an echo in Scandinavian countries. In the aftermath of the war, his links with Raoul Dautry and Claudius Petit, ministers in charge of reconstruction, allowed him to play an important role in the production of furniture with a small footprint, by adapting the techniques proven in boat cabins. In 1947, he became commissioner of the International Exhibition of Urbanism and Housing. He coordinated the construction of model apartments (Sotteville-Lès-Rouen) and met the architect Marcel Lods. It was also at this time that Marcel Gascoin and his collaborators saw their ideas prevail by adapting to the greatest number of people, for the mass production of apartments (model of apartment in Le Havre - Architect Auguste Perret...
